The Festo FPC404 series PLC is was the original control system for the earthquake simulator when installed at the former Earth Exchange Museum. This series PLC ceased production and limited support from FESTO during the early 1990s. From the outset the intention with the simulator was to replace this control with a near real-time system enabling for control of the simulator by means of globally monitored seismic data. During late 2001 the Festo FPC404 series PLC was replaced by a standard PC installed with a ComputerBoards CIO-DIO48H digital I/O card and a 48-channel solid state relay rack. Developed in C and Perl, Seismonitor v0.9 has been written to both move the system into an open (Linux) operating environment and introduce a near-real-time, IP-based interactivity to the system.
