A GUIDE TO VISITING THE MECKERING FAULT SCARP
Western Australia is blessed with some of the world's most precious natural phenomena
including the dolphins of Monkey Mia, the 350 million year old Bungle Bungle range, the
towering karri forests of the South West and the Meckering Earthquake Fault Scarp.
Meckering is located approximately 130km east of Perth of which has both international and domestic
airports. A car is essential for travel to Meckering and the surrounding region. Perth has
several car hire companies, it is recommended you book before arriving.
The Great Eastern Highway runs straight through the township of Meckering which has a population
of approximately 100 people. Meckering has a Shell Roadhouse, a Butchershop, a General Store and
The Big Camera Museum of Photography which is well worth the visit while you are in town. The Big Camera
Museum also has a collection of newspaper clippings from 1968 about the Meckering Earthquake. Don't forget
to check out the twisted railway track at the outdoor earthquake display across the road from the Shell Roadhouse.
Approximately 3km to the West of Meckering is a "Historic Earthquake Ruins" site. Take the first left
turn after the Shell Roadhouse heading East on the Great Eastern Highway and follow the marked signs
to the remaining ruins.
To visit what is remaining of the original fault scarp you drive West for 2km on the Great Eastern
Highway from the township of Meckering until you turn left at Quellington Road. Drive for a further
9km following the signs which read "Earthquake Site". On your left you will see a small corrugated iron
roofed information site. Park car and then follow the markers on foot to walk the remains of the Meckering
Fault Scarp. Beware the flies and long grass, sensible footware is advised!
With only 1.5km remaining of the original 37km fault scarp it is best viewed by a light aircraft.
Northam Aero Club(30km from the actual scarp) offers
chartered flights. Pilot Colin Ekert can be
contacted for further information.
